How To Make Taggie Blankets

How To Make Taggie BlanketsTaggie blankets are a favorite of many babies and infants. The tags, made from brightly patterned ribbons, add visual and tactile interest to a baby's favorite blanket. The ribbons are sewn in securely so that they can pull and chew on them to their heart's content. Taggie blankets make good baby shower gifts and are always appreciated.

Step1: Cut two 13-inch squares from your fabric. Soft fabrics, such as fleece or flannel, work best for use with babies.

Step 2: Cut 6-inch lengths from fabric ribbon. Wider ribbon up to 1 inch works best. You will need approximately 24 pieces of ribbon.

Step 3: Lay out one piece of fabric right-side up. Fold the ribbons in half and pin the cut edges to the edge of the fabric, spacing them approximately 2 inches apart. Pin the looped ends down so they do not get caught under the sewing needle.

Step 4: Lay the second piece of fabric right-side down on top of the first piece, sandwiching the ribbons in the middle. Pin them together.

Step 5: Sew around the outside edges of the blanket, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-inch opening on one side between the ribbons.

Step 6: Reach through the opening and turn the blanket right-side out. Fold the edges of the opening inside and pin in place.

Step 7: Top stitch as close to the edge of the blanket as possible, being careful not to catch the loose loops of ribbons in the stitches. This will give the blanket a finished look and close the opening in the side.
